Old Union Cemetery Endowment Fund
The Old Union Cemetery Endowment Fund was created in 2005 by an anonymous donor whose family history was linked to this picturesque church and cemetery. Every year the Old Union Community Association receives the income from the endowed fund to support maintenance and caretaking of the cemetery. Read on for information about other support the Association has received from the DCCF ......
In 2004 and 2005, the DCCF granted the Old Community Association a total of $10,000.00 to help with restorations of the Old Union Building in Reeve Township, Daviess County.
This project was held in high regard by the community because of the historical value of the property, cemetery and church. The church was built in 1858 and there are 7 wars represented by the Veteran's who have found their final resting place there. Veterans from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War 1, World War 2, and the Korean Conflict are buried there.
The property has been placed on both the State and National Historical Registers. The church is 150 years old and has stood longer than any other church in the area on the original site. There have been 12 different denominations that used the church, but it has not been used as an active church of any denomination since 1956.
Interested individuals and families have begun submitting genealogical documents that can be viewed by the public and copies are available. Since the work was begun, many people from several states and the local area have expressed interest by writing, sending donations, sending historical documents and visiting. Several weddings have taken place in this beautiful county setting.
The restoration of the property and the building has been an expensive and labor intensive project. Due to individual donors and grants from the DCCF, the work is almost complete.
L. Oenone Bradley, Secretary-Treasurer of the Old Union Community Association, has the following to say about the assistance received from the unrestricted grantmaking funds from the DCCF in 2004 and 2005. "The Old Union Community Association was fortunate enough to receive a grant from the DCCF in 2004 just in time to purchase the new siding required at regular prices, before the hurricanes began to batter our nation's southern coast line, as prices for building materials sky-rocketed soon thereafter. The 2005 grant has allowed us to have the roof repaired in order to complete the redecoration of the interior of the building in 2006." |
