Scholarships and Criteria

The Community Scholarship Program is active from November through June each school year. The information contained on this page is NOT to be considered current at any other time. 

The Foundation administers separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program. Eligibility, criteria, and supplemental requirements are different for each scholarship. David K. Lynch Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship established by Cathleen M. Lynch in memory of her husband.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Washington High School, Washington Catholic High School, Barr-Reeve High School, or North Daviess High School who also attended Lena Dunn Elementary School. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) and plan to attend a two- or four-year college or university in Indiana. Students who have received or have been named to receive full-tuition scholarships are not eligible for this award.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Written statement from a school official at Lena Dunn Elementary School attesting to the applicant's attendance at the school.
2.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
3.  Official grade transcript.
4.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

McKinley Vance Agri-Business Scholarship­­
Annual scholarship established by Lucile Vance in memory of her husband.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school with a scholastic rank in the upper third of their class. Applicants must have participated in 4-H for at least four years and be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at a college or university pursuing a degree in the field of agriculture (such as farming, agricultural sales, agricultural research, veterinary science, agronomy, animal science, or related fields). Past recipients may reapply; however, renewal awards are not guaranteed.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on financial need, active participation in school, church, community, and work activities, and on the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
2.  Completion of the "FAFSA4caster" and submission of your "FAFSA4caster" information sheet (FAFSA4caster Step 6) and the Estimated Federal Student Aid Eligibility report (FAFSA4caster Step 8).  To access the FAFSA4caster, visit the United States Department of Education website at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/.

4.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2010. (If this date falls on a holiday or a weekend, the application is due the preceding weekday.)

Award Amount: $850. Past recipients of the scholarship may reapply for the award in subsequent years provided they have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average in the previous semester and are enrolled in a college majoring in agriculture as described above. Past recipients must resubmit the application in full.


Dwight Risley Scholarship
Annual scholarship established by Martha Risley Reiners in memory of her husband.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Daviess County high school for tuition, books, and required fees of post-secondary education. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good scholastic standing.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).

Award Amount: $13,360. Multiple scholarships will be awarded from the total amount listed.


William and Mary Summers Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship established by Phillip M. Summers and William E. Summers in memory of their parents.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Washington High School planning full-time enrollment at Vincennes University. Although preference will be given to students majoring in Business or Education, applications will be accepted from students majoring in any subject.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on work history, financial need, school activities, community and church activities, grade point average, ACT and SAT scores, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
2.  Completion of the "FAFSA4caster" and submission of your "FAFSA4caster" information sheet (FAFSA4caster Step 6) and the Estimated Federal Student Aid Eligibility report (FAFSA4caster Step 8).  To access the FAFSA4caster, visit the United States Department of Education website at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/.

Fred Walker, Jr. Journalism Scholarship
Annual scholarship established by the Estate of Frederic Joseph Walker, Jr.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Washington Catholic High School or Washington High School who plan to study journalism at Vincennes University, Vincennes, Indiana.  Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale).

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on financial need, academic performance, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
2.  Completion of the "FAFSA4caster" and submission of your "FAFSA4caster" information sheet (FAFSA4caster Step 6) and the Estimated Federal Student Aid Eligibility report (FAFSA4caster Step 8).  To access the FAFSA4caster, visit the United States Department of Education website at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/.

Award Amount: $260.  Past recipients of the scholarship may reapply for the award in subsequent years provided they continue to study journalism at Vincennes University.  However, renewal awards are not guaranteed.


Marilyn L. Wallace Scholarship
Annual scholarship created in memory of Marilyn Wallace by her husband Lewis W. Wallace and her daughter Marcia L. McConnell.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Daviess High School who plan to pursue post-secondary education in health or health-related fields. Students who have received or have been named to receive full-tuition scholarships are not eligible for this award.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form. 

Supplemental Requirements
1.  Official grade transcript.
2.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Ray L. Angerer Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Westminster Presbyterian Church in memory of Ray L. Angerer.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be communicant members of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Washington, Indiana, pursuing a post-secondary degree at any accredited college, university, or vocational institution. Applicants may be graduating high school seniors, current college students, or non-traditional students. Past recipients may reapply; however, renewal awards are not guaranteed.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on participation and service to the church, to the community, and to school, respectively.

Award Amount: $390. Scholarship funds must be used within one year of award.


Lawrell Ray Hilgeman Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Veale Creek Players in memory of Lawrell Ray Hilgeman.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors residing or attending high school in Indiana who have been involved in productions featured at the Veale Creek Theatre in Washington, Indiana, during their high school years. Although it is desired that applicants plan to study performing arts at an accredited college or university, other majors may be considered. If there are an insufficient number of applicants in a given year, applications will be accepted from performing arts students who have not had prior involvement with the Veale Creek Theatre.
