Daviess County Women's Giving Circle 2nd Lunch-n-Learn A Success

On January 9, the second Lunch and Learn was presented by the Daviess County Women's Giving Circle at Daviess Community Hospital. A delicious healthy lunch was prepared by the hospital Dietary Staff. After a welcome by Linda Myers, President of the advisory board of the Women's Giving Circle, the group of 30 women heard health experts discuss what women need to know to stay healthy. Mary Smith, the hospital's Marketing Manager, and until 2000 the hospital dietician, discussed Diabetes from a personal standpoint. Mary has been living with type one Diabetes or over 4 decades. Dr. Joahua Leonard, with Heartland Cardiology in Jasper, IN, discussed how women experience heart disease differently than men. He also sees patients in the DCH Specialty clinic. Amy Mischler, a Physical Therapist at DCH for the last three years, had a storke in 2009 after completing an Olympic distance triathalon. Her first-hand knowledge of stroke and therapy provided key information, as well asa compelling personal story. Finishing the panel presentation, Sharon Mead told of her experience survivng breast cancer. She has been a nurse for 34 years and is a certified oncology nurse. All the presenters encouraged women to stay current with their check-ups and see their physicians regularly. Many women fet the personal experiences of the women speakers were encouraging and helpful. The next Women's Giving Circle Lunch and Learn will be announced soon. One does not need to be a member of Women's Giving Circle to attend and may also bring friends. This event is free to attendees because WGC recieved a grant for $1000 from Duke Energy Foundation to underwrite the cost of these luncheons.
